Applying to the Program

Applying to the Graduate Program in Physics or Graduate Program in C hemical and Materials Physics (ChaMP):
Applications are submitted online through the UCI Graduate Division Admissionsweb site. More information on the applications process and required application materials can be found on the Applying to UCIpage. The application deadline is December 15th.

Application Fee:

Domestic Applicants (U.S. Citizens and Permanent U.S. Residents): $135

International Applicants: $155(Foreign applicants are NOT eligible for graduate application fee waivers - no exceptions.)
In addition to the application essays and other material submitted through the application web portal, the following are required forall applicants:
***PLEASE NOTE WE ARE NOT ACCEPTING GRE SCORES. GRE scores must not be included in the application, nor should any reference to them be made anywhere in the application.**
  • Transcripts:For application review purposes only, scan and upload copies of transcripts for all institutions attended since high school. In the online application, you will be prompted to upload your scanned documents. Please upload both the front and back sides of the transcript. Uploaded transcripts should be recent and include the following: your name, dates of attendance, grades/marks received, credits and grading legend. UCI reserves the right to require official transcripts at any time during the admission process, and rescind any offer of admission made if discrepancies between uploaded and official transcript(s) are found. Official transcripts will be requested if and when you are admitted and decide to attend UCI. Do not send official transcripts until this time, unless you are requested to do so.
  • Three letters of recommendation.

Recommendation letters are usually submitted electronically, although it is possible to submit hardcopies by postal mail if necessary. For more information and instructions regarding electronic and postal letter submission, please visit:

Additional Materials for International and Permanent Resident Applicants only:
Applicants whose primary language is not English are required to demonstrate proficiency in English for admission consideration by taking the Test of English as a Foreign Language(TOEFL) Internet-based Test (iBT) or a paper-based test (PBT) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS).
PLEASE NOTE: International Student applicants are required to be eligible to serve as teaching assistants. Students with a score of 26 or higher on the Speaking component of the TOEFL iBT or a score of 8 or higher on the Speaking module of the IELTS are eligible to serve as teaching assistants.
