Nature notes
The large dragonfly zipped over the shallow pond. Seeing a butterfly, it darted up and caught its fluttering prey in mid-air. This expert hunter was a common hawker, a large inhabitant of still waters. The dark brown bodies of common hawker males are marked with blue and yellow spots that can make them look turquoise in the sunshine. The female’s brown bodies can be patterned with either yellow, green or blue spots. They have developed an extreme strategy to avoid unwanted copulation. Unlike many dragonfly species, one coupling is enough to fertilise the female, and further sexual encounters might damage them. When approached by an unwanted male, the female often feigns death, dropping dramatically from the sky. Jonathan Tulloch
