The ECE Department prefers that applicants have an undergraduate GPA of 3.25 or higher. The Graduate School requires applicants to have a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Supplemental Document Submission
& Campus/Unity ID
I have submitted my online application and all supplemental documents, but my application status still shows as “Incomplete” or “Submitted.” Is my application Complete and under review?
Your application may appear incomplete, even if you have properly submitted your online application and all of your supplemental documents by our application deadline. You can check your application status through theonline application. The status of each supplemental document will update to Complete as it is received by the Graduate School. You will not be able to see if your Areas of Interest form has been completed in the online application. You will need to check the status of your Areas of Interest form inGradWatch.
If you have just submitted your online application and paid your application processing fee, your application will be Incomplete until your recommendation letters have been received, and standardized test scores have been attached to your application. It takes up to four weeks for NC State to receive scores from ETS and several business days for the Graduate School Admissions Office to match supplemental documents and exam scores to the online application. If you are missing any supplemental documents, you will be notified by the ECE Department.
When will I receive my 9-digit Student (Campus) ID number and my Unity ID? What is the difference between the two?
Applicants will receive their Unity ID and password information in their final admission letter from the Graduate School. The decision letter will be available through theonline application; applicants must log in using the application password and the personal identification number (PIN) received through email when the application account was created.

My school does not use a 4-point grading scale. How do I convert my grade point average to a 4.0 scale?
North Carolina State University does not have a converter available to help convert a non-US GPA to the 4.0 scale. As a resource, Iowa State University hosts aGPA converteron their website. This should only be used as a guide.
I would like to submit certificates of accomplishments, resume and other documents. Where should I send them?
Financial Support
& Research Opportunities
Does the ECE Department consider applicants for financial support?
Applicants may note within the statement of purpose which faculty member or research project they are most interested in. Students are admitted to the ECE Department, not to specific research groups. If you are admitted to our graduate program, you may then begin contacting faculty to discuss potential research projects and explore the possibility of joining a particular research group.
All master’s students enter our program as non-thesis students. After you enroll in the program, if you decide that you want to pursue a master’s thesis project, we encourage you to talk with faculty members about their research projects and the possibility of completing a thesis project with them.
I am interested in doing both a Masters and a Ph.D.. Which should I apply for?
If you wish to go on to a Ph.D. you should generally apply for the Ph.D. even if you only have a BS. Most of our MS students pay their own way through the degree. In contrast, given the nature of the degree, most of our Ph.D. students are supported by the Institution through an assistantship or fellowship. If your interest is to do both a Ph.D. and MS, then you increase your chances of receiving financial support by applying for the Ph.D. Note, that most advisors expect Ph.D. students supported by assistantships to only take one-two courses per semester so they can start research.
That said, we do go through the MS applications that have indicated interest in doing a Ph.D. and review them for both degrees. Also, Ph.D. applicants who do not get a Ph.D. slot might be offered MS admission without support.
How do I maximize my chances of being accepted as a Ph.D. student?
Our Ph.D. admissions process is through our faculty.A key step in the process is a faculty member being willing to be your interim advisor. While we will distribute your application to faculty members who you name, it’s also well worth your time to reach out to potential advisors and start a dialog with them.
Who should I name as potential Ph.D. advisors?
You should follow your interests and consider what you are good at, and what you are not good at.This will help you narrow your interests to one, two or three areas. Then look at our topical research pages that list faculty by
I did not get an offer of financial support. How do I pay for my MS degree?
A number of students borrow funds to pay for an MS degree.Given the dramatic increase in earning potential an NC State MS degree gives you, this investment in yourself gives a very good return.U.S. students have the usual financial aid sources. Please check with our financial aid office. There are sources of unsecured loans available in the US to both domestic and international students. We can’t advertise them directly but they do sponsor theNCSU Indian Graduate Students Associationand links can be found there on their main page and the sponsor’s page.

My company is helping me apply for Permanent Residency. How do I request a letter to verify the skills I gained while enrolled in the ECE Department?
- Email your skills letter request to the ECE Graduate Office atecegradoffice@ncsu.edu(see details below).
- We will compose a letter for you on departmental letterhead, have it signed by Dr. Paul Franzon, the Director of Graduate Programs, and then email a scanned copy to you. We do not mail the hard copy. If you require the original letter, and cannot come to the ECE Graduate Office to pick it up in person, you may have a friend stop by our office with approved notice to pick up your letter.
- We cannot verify skills in courses in which a grade of “B-” or below was received. We also do not verify skills in courses taken as AU (Audit) or S/U (Satisfactory or Unsatisfactory).
- It typically takes 10-15 business days for our office to prepare your letter and email it to you. We ask that you plan for this in advance and submit your letter request at least a month prior to your deadline. Our office experiences a high volume of letter requests on top of our current student paperwork so your patience is very much appreciated.
Email the ECE Graduate Office staff atecegradoffice@ncsu.eduwith the following details and we will prepare your letter:
- Full name, 9-digit student ID number, degree obtained (plan and program, i.e. Master of Science in Electrical Engineering), and graduation semester and year
