Create business connections
QUT provided me with the perfect platform to become an entrepreneur. Throughout my degree I had opportunities to network and build my connections. Accounting is more than crunching numbers, it’s often referred to as the 'language of business' as accountants provide key stakeholders with the financial and non-financial information that underpins all business decisions.
If you're data-driven, have an analytical mind and enjoy problem-solving, consider a dynamic future in accounting with QUT's accounting major.
Accountants are in strong demand and work all over the world across a range of industries. All businesses require accountants, and many chief executive officers, board directors and entrepreneurs have accounting degrees.
QUT's Accounting major is future-focused and designed and taught by industry experts and world-class academics to help you develop the skills and expertise needed for a successful career.
As technological advancements have changed the way we do business, you will learn how accounting systems function and will develop skills using a range of techniques and tools to provide and interpret business information. Developments in technology are integrated throughout the course, and assessment tasks are designed around cases, to ensure that your degree always has a practical focus.
Throughout this major, you will also have great opportunities to be placed in industry-leading organisations and workplaces, where you'll engage with accounting professionals, build important networks, and learn what your future career could really be like.
Your final-year capstone unit is an extended simulation where you and your colleagues will provide professional advice to solve real-world problems for industry clients. These real-world problems will be similar to what you will encounter in your career, and this unit will give you valuable hands-on experience.
Our Accounting major, together with specified core units, will allow you to pursue qualification as a professional accountant (such as a Chartered Accountant or CPA). These are amongst the most recognised and desirable business qualifications in Australia and worldwide.
Careers and outcomes
As all businesses make use of accounting information to make decisions, professional accountants are in high demand nationally and internationally by organisations throughout commercial, public, and not-for-profit sectors.
Qualification as a professional accountant (such as a Chartered Accountant or CPA) opens even more doors, as these qualifications are recognised around the world, and professional accountants are actively sought out for their expertise.
Professional recognition
The Bachelor of Business (Accounting) meets the accreditation requirements for CPA Australia, Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CA ANZ), and the Institute of Public Accountants (IPA). In order to enrol in their respective professional programs and ultimately qualify as a professional accountant, graduates must have completed:
- Core units BSB105, BSB106, BSB108, BSB131, BSB151 & BSB152
- All accounting major units
Graduates are also eligible for exemptions in the qualifying program for membership of the UK-based Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) and the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA).
Students who complete specified units within the Regulation and Tax Extension will meet the academic entry requirements for registration as a Tax Agent with the Tax Practitioners Board.
Graduates will also meet the requirements for affiliate membership with the Governance Institute of Australia, which can lead to qualification as a Chartered Governance Professional.
