The Master of Financial Planning is a highly specialised program that has been designed and developed in consultation with industry experts. The degree combines advanced technical rigour with practical and relevant performance-focused learning outcomes, and also offers contemporary teachings in financial advice strategy and theory, financial markets and products, risk management, tax law, compliance and ethics. Financial planning at Western

Recent changes to educational requirements means professionals may need to upgrade their degrees in order to continue to practise as a financial planner. The Master of Financial Planning from Western’s Postgraduate Business School, SGSM, meets these new Financial Adviser Standards and Ethics Authority Limited (FASEA) requirements. Our degree is also accredited by the FPA and AFA, meaning students will be eligible to apply for membership once graduated. Offered online, this degree is designed to give you advanced knowledge of financial planning and increase your competencies in financial advice strategy and theory, financial markets and products, risk management, tax law, compliance and ethics. If you are eligible for our Challenge Assessment, you can gain credit for your existing knowledge and experience within the financial planning industry, allowing you to fast-track your path to the full degrees you now need. Western Sydney University also offers degrees in Financial Planning at the Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma level.

This degree is accredited by the AFA, FPA, FPEC and FASEA and satisfies the tertiary degrees required to register as a Tax (Financial) Advisor with the Tax Practitioners Board (TPB).

The School of Business has been awarded AACSB (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) accreditation for its excellence in business education.

Due to legislative changes, there are new requirements that mean financial advisers must hold a degree in order to practice within their field. New financial advisers need a degree by 2019, while existing advisers need degrees by 2026. At Western, we recognise that prior working knowledge and experience can be highly valuable and relevant to further study, so we have created the Challenge Assessment.

This program allows eligible students who have more than two years’ experience the opportunity to undertake two Challenge Assessments with Western. These will help us evaluate your knowledge and potentially fast-track your pathway to an accredited degree. Please note the Challenge Assessment is only available to candidates that have relevant working experience and knowledge within the Financial Planning field.

The Challenge Assessment is available for the following subjects: Communication and Ethics in Financial Planning, Principles of Financial Planning, Investment Planning, Superannuation, Planning for Retirement and Funds Management & Portfolio Selection.

Entry requirements for domestic students

Admission

  • Applicants must have successfully completed an undergraduate degree, or higher, in a business discipline; Or
  • Successfully completed an undergraduate degree, or higher, in any discipline and have a minimum of two years full-time equivalent managerial/professional work experience in a related field; Or
  • Successfully completed an undergraduate degree, or higher, in any discipline and have a minimum of five years general work experience in a related field.

Applicants seeking admission on the basis of work experience must support their application with a current CV for all work experience listed on their application and a Confirmation of Employment for all work experience listed on the application. Only applicants seeking admission through an established industry partnership agreement can provide an agreed alternative to the Confirmation of Employment. The confirmation of employment can be either be a letter on employer letterhead specifying their role and length of service or the industry declaration form.

Applicants who have undertaken studies overseas may have to provide proof of proficiency in English.

Overseas qualifications must be deemed by the Australian Education International - National Office of Overseas Skills Recognition (AEI-NOOSR) to be equivalent to Australian qualifications in order to be considered by UAC and Western Sydney University.
