Transfer applicants:Transfer eligibility

The transfer application is intended for students who have finished high school and completed at least one year of college. If you are still in high school, you are considered a first-year applicant regardless of how many classes you may have taken at the university or college level.

The transfer application is closed in theMIT application portal.

One application per entry year

Transfer students may only submitone application per entry year, meaning if you apply to enter in the spring term, you cannot reapply for the fall term of the same calendar year. (For example, if you apply for the spring 2024 term, you cannot also apply for the fall 2024 term, because both terms occur in the same entry year.) If you are a citizen of a foreign country, you may apply for fall (September) entry only.

Term eligibility

Minimum of two terms of full-time study

Students who will have completed at least two terms of study with high academic standing at an accredited college, university, technical institute, or community college may apply for transfer admission. If you are in your first year of college, the earliest you can apply to transfer to MIT is during your second term of study.

Maximum of five terms of full-time study

Students whoat the time of entryto MIT will have completed more than two and a half years (i.e., five terms) of college may not be eligible because of our residency requirements.

If you have been enrolled in college part-time, you should calculate your full-time term equivalency in order to estimate your eligibility. Keep in mind that eligibility will be assessed by the Admissions Committee in the application review process.

MIT does not award second bachelor’s degrees

MIT does not award second bachelor’s degrees—even if you are interested in pursuing a different field of study from the bachelor’s degree you hold. If you are ineligible for either first-year or transfer admissions, you may consider MIT’s opportunities forgraduate education, open learning, orprofessional education.
