Research Areas
Civil and environmental engineers at Penn State are trained to solve the design, construction, and maintenance concerns of the natural and physically built environment. We deal with public works including highways, railroads, bridges, buildings, and water and energy systems. We seek to tackle some of the major problems facing engineering today and lead the industry in research discoveries and design innovations. We work in a variety of fields to develop solutions for challenges in design, construction, research, and education.
Our graduate students are given a variety of customized research areas to choose from, including one in environmental engineering and four in civil engineering:
- Environmental Engineering (ENV ENG)
- Geotechnical and Materials Engineering (CIVIL ENG)
- Structural Engineering and Mechanics (CIVIL ENG)
- Transportation Engineering (CIVIL ENG)
- Water Resources Engineering (CIVIL ENG)
*Please note: If you intend to apply to a graduate program in environmental engineering, please select the ENV ENG application, not the CIVIL ENG application.
