Learn how each segment of media functions, and build the knowledge required to make content and campaigns shine in this agile, ever-changing environment.

Calling on extensive links to industry, you will undertake a collaborative media project that allows you to develop and create your own original production project with input from peers, teachers, and professional practicitioners. You also have the option of undertaking an industry placement wherein you will be immersed in a real-world media environment, be exposed to industry best practice, and begin building your professional network.

You will learn in RMIT's state-of-the-art facilities and dedicated media precinct, allowing you to build confidence with industry-standard equipment before you pursue professional practice.

Developing practical experience and contextual knowledge throughout your studies, you will strengthen your skills in research, creativity, teamwork and efficiency, allowing you to plan, produce and deliver your own media projects and pursue your goals as the consumate media professional.

Learning and teaching

In the Graduate Diploma of Media, you will learn through a variety of contemporary approaches, utilising both face-to-face and online classes. With a blend of seminars, lectures and tutorials, you will undertake collaborative group work, peer review, presentations, exercises and workshops, and group discussions, and learn to constructively critique your own work and that of your peers. Case studies, problem-based learning, and reflective learning will allow you to explore the full scope of media production.

Assessment methods

This highly practical graduate diploma encourages hands-on learning, and you will be assessed on activities including media production projects, written reflections, research, portfolios, presentations and peer and industry reviews. Your projects and presentations will be directly linked to industry-specific needs, ensuring your learning and assessment addresses the current requirements of industry and prepares you for your career.

The School of Media and Communication has extensive links with industry organisations and associations, including the ABC, Screen Australia, the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI), and many more.

You will be taught both by academics with strong industry links and professional experience in media production, and guest lecturers currently working in the media industries to ensure you are exposed to up-to-the-minute industry trends and developments.

The course regularly consults with an Industry Advisory Committee (IAC) that consists of high-profile industry representatives. Part of the IAC’s brief is to ensure that the course's links with industry standards and practice remain current.

As part of your study, you will undertake a collaborative media project in which you will develop and create one or more small original production projects, exploring professional practice, forms and processing, with input from peers, staff and industry. You may also choose to undertake a professional placement or internship to broaden your learning and professional network.

The knowledge and skills you will acquire throughout this degree and how they can be applied in your career are described in thelearning outcomes.

As a student in this graduate diploma, you will undertake five core subjects and choose one elective.

Your core studies will encompass contemporary work practices, sound and image, storytelling and the importance of its medium, and collaborative practices that ensure you are prepared for a real-world work environment.

Your elective subject allows you to delve deeper into an area that interests you, and spans topics including writing and editing, the philosophy and ethics of professional communication, advertising, and specific streams of communication, including political, change, risk and crisis, health, and financial communication.

As part of your studies you may have the opportunity to undertake an industry placement or internship.

Upon successful completion of the Graduate Diploma of Media, you will have the highly specialised knowledge and practical skills required to thrive in the modern media environment.

With its focus on creativity and production, this graduate diploma will prepare you for roles in:

  • Film:producer, director, videographer, video editor
  • Marketing and communications:digital content developer, social media marketer, communications consultant
  • New media:visual journalist, videogeapher, podcaster

You may also use your newly developed skills to forge your own path as an entrepreneur or content creator, or pursue further study with theMaster of Media.

Entry requirements and admissions

You need to satisfy all of the following entry requirements to be considered for entry into this degree.

You must have:

  • successfully completed an Australian bachelor degree (or equivalent overseas qualification), OR
  • a minimum of 3 years professional work experience in a related industry.

To have your professional experience considered you must submit with your application a CV and a personal statement detailing your experience

There are no prerequisite subjects required for entry into this qualification.

A selection task is not required for entry into this qualification.

You must meet the University'sminimum English language requirements to be eligible for a place in this program.

Pathways

You can gain entry to this masters degree from a range of RMIT undergraduate programs, if you meet the entry requirements.

Credit, recognition of prior learning, professional experience and accreditation from a professional body can reduce the duration of your study by acknowledging your earlier, relevant experience.

Credit and exemptions will be assessed consistent with the principles of theRMIT Credit Policy.

Upon successful completion of this program, you can continue your studies inMC188 Master of Media, subject to the program's entrance requirements and receive 96 credit points of advanced standing into the master program.

  • Full-fee places: AU$29,760* (2025 total).

  • Student services and amenities fee (SSAF): AU$365 maximum fee for 2025*.

Annual fee adjustment*

Amounts quoted are indicative fees per annum, and are based on a standard year of full-time study (96 credit points). A proportionate fee applies for more or less than the full-time study load.

*Fees are adjusted on an annual basis and these fees should only be used as a guide.

Defer your payment

This program is offered on a full-fee paying basis only. If you are offered a place, you will need to pay the full tuition costs of your program. However, eligible students (such as Australian citizens or holders of an Australian permanent humanitarian visa) may apply to defer payment of some or all of their tuition fees via the Commonwealth Government’sFEE-HELPloan scheme.

Paying your fees and applying for refunds

In addition to tuition fees, you will be charged an annualstudent services and amenities fee (SSAF), which is used to maintain and enhance services and amenities that improve your experience as an RMIT student.

The SSAF is calculated based on your enrolment load and the maximum fee for 2025 is $365.

You may also be required to purchase other items related to your course, including field trips, textbooks and equipment. Theseadditional fees and expensesvary from course to course.

FEE-HELP loans

Eligible students (such as Australian citizens or holders of an Australian permanent humanitarian visa) may apply to defer payment of some or all of their tuition fees via the Commonwealth Government’sFEE-HELPloan scheme.

SA-HELP Loans

You may be eligible to apply to defer payment of the Student services and amenities fee (SSAF) through theSA-HELPloan scheme. If you use SA-HELP, the amount will be added to your accumulated HELP debt.

How does a HELP loan work?

If your FEE-HELP and/or SA-HELP loan application is successful, the Australian Government will pay RMIT, on your behalf, up to 100% of your fees. This amount will become part of your accumulatedHELPdebt.

You only start repaying your accumulated HELP debt to the Australian Government once you earn above the minimum income threshold for repayment, which is set each year by the Australian Government (this also applies if you are still studying). The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) will calculate your compulsory repayment for the year and include this on your income tax notice.
