Department of Statistics

Students applying to the Ph.D. program should have a strong background in Statistics and sufficient training in Mathematics. Students interested in the M.S. degree, with little to no background in Statistics will need to fulfill deficiencies by taking 3 statistics related courses.

Minimum test score requirements for the M.S. and Ph.D. admissions are as follows:

• 3.00 GPA (M.S.) and 3.25 (Ph.D.) based on last 2 yrs of Bachelor's Degree.
• TOEFL (International Students) score of 550 Written / 213 Computer/80 Internet base.

These are minimum requirements, but higher scores along with a strong academic background, excellent letters of recommendation and experience make an applicant competitive for admissions and fellowships.

Fall Quarter Admission and Fellowship Consideration for Ph.D. Applicants (Domestic and International):
Applications are accepted forfall quarter. Apply by the deadlines to receive priority consideration for funding and admissions.

Ph.D. Applicants:

Qualified admitted Ph.D. students are offered a 5-year financial package that may include Stipend, Teaching / Research Assistantships, and job opportunities at our Statistical Consulting Collaboratory.

Eligibility for admission and fellowship are determined on the basis of a number of factors including appropriate courses, grade point average, graduate record examination scores, the quality of institution, letters of recommendation, and demonstrated ability to conduct independent research are all strongly taken into consideration.

Students exceeding the minimum requirements are considered for fellowship consideration. Fellowships are available only to Ph.D. eligible admitted students.

Due to a limited number of fellowships, students are encourage to apply early to meet the January 5th deadline.

Graduate Admissions encourages applicants to submit unofficial transcripts for application file review process. These can be uploaded to the electronic application or emailed tostat@ucr.edu. If admitted, one set of official transcripts is required with the degree(s) posted. International students are required to submit the official original language transcript and an official English language translation, along with the degree certificates.

This exam must be taken within two years of the time you intend to enroll at UCR. The minimum acceptable scores are: 550 for the written exam; 213 for the computer-based exam, and 80 for the internet-based exam (iBT). Submit scores with your application to avoid delays with your admissions.If you earned an advanced degree from an institution where English is the exclusive language of instruction, the TOEFL test will be waived.

Three letters of recommendation are required and at least two of these letters should be requested from professors in your major subject.
