The Department of Communication offers a doctoral program that ranks among the best in the country. Recent graduates of the program have gone on to academic positions at such research focused universities as Gonzaga University, Johns Hopkin's University, Penn State University, University of Colorado, University of Iowa, and the University of Maryland, taken up teaching-focused positions at such places as Bethany College, Christopher Newport University, and Washington and Jefferson University, and undertaken professional careers in such areas as health communication, marketing, and community engagement.
The Department of Communication faculty members believe that the success of the graduate program depends largely on the quality of its students. The program aims to recruit and admit highly motivated students who see the value of communication study for improving the world we live in and then to provide the teaching and mentoring to help these students succeed on whatever path their academic and professional journey takes them.
