Australia
Typical offers for applicants being indexed on a scale within the Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR) would be based on a rank of 98.5–99.5 overall together with documentation of similar performance in relevant individual subjects. These depend on the course applied for, and will be set by the Colleges. For many courses, a top result in Mathematics at the highest academic level will form part of any offer, and this can apply to such courses as Economics, Engineering and Natural Sciences, as well as Mathematics itself.
Applicants should be aware that the ATAR score published by the relevant State body is the score that will be used to determine whether they have met any offer conditions (eg only adjustments implemented by the awarding body will be considered).
Austria
Typical offers for applicants taking the Reifeprüfung/Maturazeugnis would be based on an average of 1.3 (high distinction or mit ausgezeichnetem Erfolg bestanden). Applicants are also usually asked to achieve scores of 1 (sehr gut) out of 5 in written exams in up to two subjects.
Bangladesh
The Higher School Certificate (HSC)/Intermediate Certificate and equivalents are not considered to be suitable preparation for a competitive application to the University of Cambridge. We strongly recommend that you undertake further study if you wish to apply for an undergraduate degree.

Bosnia and Herzegovina
Typical offers for applicants taking the Diploma o položenom maturskom ispitu (RS)/Diploma o završenoj srednjoj školi (FiBH) (Secondary School Leaving Diploma) would be based on an overall score of 5.0 and 5.0 in individual subjects.
Brazil
The Certificado de Ensino Médio is not considered to be suitable preparation for a competitive application to the University of Cambridge. We strongly recommend that you undertake further study if you wish to apply for an undergraduate degree.

Some applicants may be set lower offers or more challenging ones. Applicants may be required to achieve A* in a particular subject(s) depending on individual circumstances.
Bulgaria
Typical offers for applicants taking the Diploma za Sredno Obrazovanie (Diploma for Completed Secondary Education) would be based on an overall score of 5.8, and 6.0 in two relevant Matura subjects. We recommend that prospective applicants take a third relevant subject to the highest level possible within their school.
Cameroon
Typical offers for applicants studying the Cameroon GCE Advanced Levels would be based on grades AAA in relevant subjects.
Applicants studying towards International A Levels (offered by Cambridge International, Oxford AQA or Pearson Edexcel) should refer to the A Level requirements on our general Entry Requirements webpage.
Canada
High School Diplomas
Canadian High School Diplomas are not considered to be suitable preparation for a competitive application to the University of Cambridge.
Applications from students taking Canadian High School Diplomas from any province will only be considered competitive if they are accompanied by additional qualifications. Details are given below about the typical qualifications and levels expected to be achieved in addition to a very high level of performance in your High School Diploma:
- College Board Advanced Placement Tests - grades of 5 in five or more AP Tests; or
- IBO International Baccalaureate Diploma - 776-777 in three IB Higher Level Courses; or
- In some circumstances, our Colleges may consider an application from a student who is undertaking the first year of an undergraduate degree at a university outside the UK.
Where applicants are able to do so, grades in an AP or IB Course as part of a Diploma and the separate grade for an AP Test or IB Certificate can both count towards both requirements.
Applicants studying towards Canadian High School Diplomas will be expected to be on course to attain grades at a very high level in relevant subjects to the course being applied to. Grades expected may vary between province or territory, but will typically be expected to be on course to attain an overall average of 90% in six or more Grade 12 courses.
Other Qualifications

Colleges are aware that applicants from Canada will sometimes be able to provide application profiles that include a combination of different qualification types (eg AP Tests, A Levels, IB Higher Level Courses). Colleges will assess these on a case-by-case basis, but applicants should be aware that a very high level of attainment will be required.
Applicants also often apply as affiliated applicants having completed a first degree.

China
The Gaokao is regarded as suitable preparation for Cambridge, but competitive applicants studying for the Gaokao are typically able to demonstrate additional academic achievement. This might include, for example, relevant science Olympiads or College Board Advanced Placement Tests (APs).
Normally, any offer made to a successful applicant based upon achievement in the Gaokao will be conditional on achieving a rank within the top 0.1% of those taking the Gaokao in their province, but individual circumstances will be carefully considered by the admitting College when confirming an offer with particular attention paid to relevant subjects examined. It is therefore recommended that you contact the College you wish to apply to for further advice and guidance.
Applicants from PR China are welcome to apply with the assistance of the China Excellence Identification Scheme. Applicants will be required to take written, subject-dependent Aptitude Scholastic Tests in Mathematics, Physics and English at centres in China. When presented by applicants, scores in the Aptitude Scholastic Tests are used as an additional aid in the selection of applicants for interview. Those applying with only the Gaokao may find this support to be valuable. Other evidence of English Language competence would also enhance an application.
Colombia
The Colombian Bachiller Académico is not considered to be suitable preparation for a competitive application to the University of Cambridge. We strongly recommend that you undertake further study if you wish to apply for an undergraduate degree.
Examples of qualifications that would be considered suitable for admission to Cambridge include:
- A Levels
- International Baccalaureate (IB)
- five or more Advanced Placement (AP) courses

Croatia
Typical offers for applicants taking the Svjedodžba o državnoj Maturi (Certificate of State Maturity) would be based on an overall score of 5.0 with a score of 5.0 in relevant subjects. Applicants would usually be expected to take all Svjedodžba o državnoj Maturi subjects at Higher (A) level.
Cyprus
Typical offers for applicants taking the Apolytirion would be based on an average of 19 points and at least 2 GCE A Levels at grade A* or A.
Czech Republic
Typical offers for applicants taking the Maturitni Zkouška would be to pass the Maturitni with a score of 1 (vyborny) in at least 3 relevant subjects.
Denmark
Typical offers for applicants taking the Højere Forberedelseseksamen (HF, extended version) / Højere Handelseksamen (HHX) / Studentereksamen (STX) / Højere Teknisk Eksamen (HTX) would be based on an average overall score of 11 and applicants may be expected to achieve grade 12 in relevant subjects at level A. Please note that HTX Biotechnology is accepted as a suitable science subject in lieu of Biology.
Applicants taking the Højere Forberedelseseksamen (extended version) / Højere Handelseksamen / Højere Teknisk Eksamen should take particular care to ensure that they meet any specific subject requirements for their chosen course, and may wish to consult a College Admissions Office for advice. Applicants for Sciences courses with either the HTX or STX should be aware that significant additional independent study will be required for both the admissions assessment and the commencement of the course. Please see the individual course pages for details on admissions assessment requirements.
Ecuador
The Título de Bachiller en Ciencias is not considered to be suitable preparation for a competitive application to the University of Cambridge. We strongly recommend that you undertake further study if you wish to apply for an undergraduate degree.

Estonia
Typical offers for applicants taking the Gumnaasiumi Ioptunnistus with Riigiesksamitsunnistus (Secondary School Leaving Certificate with the State Examination Certificate) would be based on an overall average score of 5 from five subjects. Applicants are also usually asked to achieve scores of 90% in three state exams (Riigeksam) in individual subjects.
Students taking two state exams and instead of a state exam in a foreign language, the C1 Advanced, formerly known as Cambridge English Advanced (CAE), fulfil the entry requirements.
If no state examinations are to be conducted in the subject(s) you have been asked to take as part of your offer, it is essential that you contact your Cambridge College as soon as you are made aware of this and before the examinations take place.
Successful applicants studying for the Gumnaasiumi Ioptunnistus with Riigiesksamitsunnistus have usually undertaken additional study outside of their main qualification. In the past, this has meant good performance in relevant science Olympiads or College Board Advanced Placement tests (APs).
Finland
Typical offers for applicants taking the Ylioppilastutkintodistus (Matriculation Examination) would be based on a minimum of three subjects at grade 7 or laudatur and two subjects at grade 6 or exima cum laude approbaturnone.
France
Typical offers for applicants taking the Diplôme du baccalauréat general (French Baccalaureate, including the baccalauréat français international) would be based on 17 (mention très bien) out of 20. Applicants are also usually asked to achieve a minimum of 17 in individual subjects.
Please note that in recent admissions rounds, most successful applicants have exceeded the minimum entry requirement of 17 out of 20, especially in relevant subjects. Applicants for Cambridge courses with significant Mathematics content (eg Computer Science, Economics, Natural Sciences) should note that there will likely be Mathematics questions at interviews in early December. There are a number of Mathematics resources available online, such as NRICH Mathematics, which can provide useful preparation and practice if you are invited to interview.
Germany
Typical offers for applicants taking the German Abitur would be based on an overall score of between 1.0 and 1.2, with 14 or 15 in individual subjects. This would include high scores in individual LK (Leistungskurse)/Kurse mit erhöhtem Anforderungsniveau subjects where the subjects are required at A Level (see the relevant course page for details).
Ghana
The West African Senior School Certificate Examination is not considered to be suitable preparation for a competitive application to the University of Cambridge. We strongly recommend that you undertake further study if you wish to apply for an undergraduate degree.
Examples of qualifications that would be considered suitable for admission to Cambridge include:
- A Levels
- International Baccalaureate (IB)
- five or more Advanced Placement (AP) courses
- possibly the first year of an undergraduate degree at a university outside the UK

Greece
Typical offers for applicants taking the Apolytirion of Lykeio would be based on an overall score of 19 together with 2 GCE A Levels in appropriate subjects at grade A* or A or an overall score of 19 in the Pan Hellenic examinations if GCE A Levels are not available.
Guyana
Typical offers for applicants taking the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) would be based on Grade I in three two-unit courses in relevant subjects. We also accept the CAPE Associate Degree and CAPE Diploma, if the requirements above are met.
Hong Kong
Typical Offer Level
The typical offer level for candidates taking the HKDSE will depend on the Cambridge course for which you are applying. Applicants will normally be expected to obtain:
Core Subjects
Grades of 5 in all core subjects, and grades of 5* in two or more relevant core subjects.
Please note that for Cambridge courses that require Mathematics and Further Mathematics A Levels, applicants are required to take Extended Module 2 (Algebra and Calculus) Mathematics as part of their core.
For Cambridge courses that require Mathematics A Level, applicants are advised to take either Extended Module 1 (Calculus and Statistics) or Extended Module 2 (Algebra and Calculus) Mathematics as part of their core.
A Level Further Mathematics and/or Mathematics is desirable but not a requirement for some courses. Prospective applicants for these courses might want to consider taking the appropriate Mathematics Extended Module.
Applicants will normally be expected to attain a pass mark in Citizenship and Social Development.

Elective Subjects
Applicants for arts courses (except Economics), Psychological and Behavioural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine will be expected to achieve a minimum of 5*55 in their electives.
Applicants for science courses (excluding Psychological and Behavioural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine) and Economics will be expected to achieve a minimum of 5*5*5 in their electives.
General Guidance
Applicants for all Cambridge courses may sometimes be asked to achieve 5** in a subject from their electives or the core in place of one or more 5* grades as set out above.
When choosing electives, prospective applicants should consult our course pages to identify close subject matches.
Combined Science can provide appropriate preparation, but for many courses Colleges will want you to take Biology, Chemistry and/or Physics as individual electives.
‘Applied’ Category A electives (such as Health Management and Social Care, Integrated Science Technology and Living, Tourism and Hospitality Studies) and Category B electives don’t provide an appropriate preparation for most Cambridge courses, where the emphasis is more academic than vocational. However, if required/highly desirable subjects are covered by the Core and other Electives, applicants taking such electives as their seventh or eighth HKDSE subject would be considered.
Category C electives can form part of a Cambridge offer, especially where there is a language element to the course. The typical offer level for these courses would be an ‘A’.
Hungary
Typical offers for applicants taking the Matura /Érettségi Bizonyítvány (Secondary Education Graduation Certificate) would be based on at least four subjects at grade 5 (jeles) and one at grade 4. Where there is a required subject for the degree scheme (eg Mathematics for Mathematics, Physics or Engineering degrees), students would be expected to take the Higher (emelt szintu) examination in this subject. We would normally expect students to be taking at least two of the five Matura subjects at the Higher Level.
Iceland
Typical offers for applicants taking the Stúdentspróf (bóknámsbraut/academic) (Matriculation Certificate) would be based on an overall score of 9.5, with 10 in individual subjects.
India
Class XII
Class XII school leaving qualifications are not considered to be suitable preparation for a competitive application to the University of Cambridge.
Applications from students taking Class XII school leaving qualifications from any exam board will only be considered competitive if they are accompanied by additional qualifications. Details are given below about the typical qualifications and levels expected to be achieved in addition to a very high level of performance in Class XII:
- College Board Advanced Placement Tests - offers for all Cambridge courses (though please see the note on Mathematics under STEP below) may be made conditional on achieving grades of 5 in five or more AP Tests
- IIT-JEE (Advanced) - offers for Chemical Engineering, Engineering, Natural Sciences (Physical) may be made conditional on a rank of <2000 in the IIT JEE (Advanced)
- STEP - offers for Mathematics will be conditional on achievement in the Sixth Term Examination Paper (STEP). STEP may also be required for offers for other subjects, such as Computer Science, Engineering, and Economics, where attainment equivalent to A Level Mathematics and/or Further Mathematics cannot be demonstrated by any other means. Please note that all Mathematics offers will have a STEP condition attached (including for applicants taking AP Tests or the IIT JEE). See our STEP webpage for more information.
Applicants studying towards Class XII will be expected to be on course to attain grades at a very high level in relevant subjects to the course being applied to. Grades expected depend on the Board with which you are studying, examples of typical requirement from some example boards are detailed below:
- CISCE and NIOS - applicants will require scores of 90% or higher in five or more relevant subjects
- CBSE - applicants will require five or more A1 grades in relevant subjects
- State Boards - applicants will be considered on a case-by-case basis, however applicants will typically require scores of 95% or equivalent in five or more relevant subjects.
Indonesia
The Ijazah - Sekolah Menengah Atas/Madrasah Aliyah (SMA/MA) (Certificate of Graduation from Academic/Islamic Secondary School) / Surat Tanda Tamat Belajar (SMA/MA) is not considered to be suitable preparation for a competitive application to the University of Cambridge. We strongly recommend that you undertake further study if you wish to apply for an undergraduate degree.
Examples of qualifications that would be considered suitable for admission to Cambridge include:
- A Levels
- International Baccalaureate (IB)

Typical offers for applicants taking the theoretical stream (Nazari) in 3 years of upper-secondary school and the Konkur would be based on achieving a mark of 19 overall in the theoretical stream (Nazari) High School Diploma and 80% in the Konkur (National Entrance Examinations).
Ireland
The typical offers for students taking the Irish Leaving Certificate and applying for arts subjects (except Economics), Psychological and Behavioural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine would be based on H1H1H1H2H2H2. The typical offers for students taking the Irish Leaving Certificate and applying for other science subjects (excluding Psychological and Behavioural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine) and Economics would be based on H1H1H1H1H2H2. Applicants for Medicine should note that a rounded knowledge of Mathematics and the Sciences at GCSE level equivalent is required for the UCAT. Israel
Typical offers for applicants studying the Bagrut (Matriculation Certificate) would be based on an overall score of 90, with 90 in a minimum of three Level 5 subjects.
Italy
Typical offers for applicants studying the Diploma Di Esame Di Stato would be based on a minimum overall score of at least 100%.
Jamaica
Typical offers for applicants taking the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) would be based on Grade I in three two-unit courses in relevant subjects. We also accept the CAPE Associate Degree and CAPE Diploma, if the requirements above are met.
Japan
The Kōtō Gakkō Sotsugyō Shōmei Sho alone is not considered to be suitable preparation for a competitive application to the University of Cambridge.
Applications from students taking the Kōtō Gakkō Sotsugyō Shōmei Sho will only be considered competitive if accompanied by additional qualifications. Details are given below about the typical qualifications and levels expected to be achieved in addition to a very high level of performance in the Kōtō Gakkō Sotsugyō Shōmei Sho:
- STEP - offers for Mathematics will be conditional on achievement in the Sixth Term Examination Paper (STEP). STEP may also be required for offers for other subjects, such as Computer Science, Engineering, and Economics, where attainment equivalent to A Level Mathematics and/or Further Mathematics cannot be demonstrated by any other means. Please note that all Mathematics offers will have a STEP condition attached (including for applicants taking AP Tests). See our STEP webpage for more information.
- Strong performance in relevant regional or international Olympiads (particularly in the Sciences), individual A-levels or IB Higher Level subjects, or Advanced Placement tests. In some circumstances, Colleges may consider an application from a student who is undertaking one year of undergraduate study at a university outside the UK, and wishes to use that study as evidence of their suitability for our degree course. Applicants who have already completed a full undergraduate degree elsewhere may apply for affiliated entry.
Jordan
The Certificate of General Secondary Education is not considered on its own to be suitable preparation for a competitive application to the University of Cambridge. We strongly recommend that you undertake further study if you wish to apply for an undergraduate degree.

Luxembourg
Typical offers for applicants taking the Diplôme de Fin d'Etudes Secondaires would be based on an overall score of at least 50 (très bien).
Malaysia
Typical offers for applicants taking the STPM (Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia) (Malaysia Higher School Certificate) would be based on grades AAA.
Typical offers for applicants taking the Matrikulasi (Matriculation Certificate) would be based on a CGPA of 3,80.
Maldives

Singapore
Applicants taking the Singapore-Cambridge GCE Advanced Levels would be expected to be taking four subjects at H2 Level. The typical offer level would be AAAA at H2 Level. Applicants should take relevant H3 subjects where these are available to them. Where H3 subjects are being taken the typical offer level would be at least a Merit at the H3 Level or Distinction at the H3 Level in addition to AAAA at H2 Level, but all offers will be based on individual circumstances.
The Cambridge Colleges welcome applications from those taking Knowledge & Inquiry as a fourth H2 (contrasting subject). If you plan on taking Knowledge & Inquiry as one of your three ‘subject relevant’ H2s please contact the College that you wish to apply to for further advice and guidance.
Typical offers for applicants taking the National University of Singapore High School Diploma are made on a case-by-case basis and would be based on achieving a High Distinction, or a Distinction when accompanied by additional qualifications such as APs. Applicants taking the National University of Singapore High School Diploma are encouraged to take relevant subjects to the highest possible level within the Diploma.
Singapore Polytechnic Diplomas
Singapore Polytechnic Diploma students will be considered for Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences courses (including Economics) and Psychological and Behavioural Sciences. The typical offer level would be a GPA of 3.85 or higher. It is very important that you are studying subject relevant modules in your Diploma, and you should contact the College that you wish to apply to for further advice and guidance.
A Singapore Polytechnic Diploma on its own will not be considered suitable preparation for a competitive application to Cambridge Science courses (excluding Psychological and Behavioural Sciences). Slovenia
Typical offers for applicants taking the Maturitetno spričevalo (Matura Certificate) would be based on a score of at least 4 in all subjects with the majority at 5 and scores of 5 in individual subjects.
South Africa
Applicants from South Africa should note that the National Senior Certificate (NSC) will only be considered to form part of a competitive application to Cambridge if additional qualifications are also taken. This includes the NSC taken through the Independent Examinations Board (IEB).
Applicants taking the NSC will be expected to complete the NSC with seven passes to include grades 7, 7, 7, 7, 7, 7 (excluding Life Orientation). You will also need to undertake further study. Examples of suitable further study include relevant science Olympiads, A Levels, the International Baccalaureate (IB), Advanced Placement (AP) Tests, or possibly the first year of an undergraduate degree at a university outside the UK.

Ukraine
The Certificate of Complete General Education alone is not considered to be suitable preparation for a competitive application to the University of Cambridge.
Applications from students taking the Certificate of Complete General Education will only be considered competitive if accompanied by a score of at least 182 in specified elements of the Independent External Examination (IEE) and additional evidence of academic attainment or study. Details are given below about the typical evidence expected in addition to a very high level of performance in both the Certificate of Complete General Education and the Independent External Examination:
- STEP - offers for Mathematics will be conditional on achievement in the Sixth Term Examination Paper (STEP). STEP may also be included in offers for other subjects, such as Computer Science, Engineering, and Economics, where attainment equivalent to A Level Further Mathematics cannot be demonstrated by any other means. - Strong performance in relevant regional or international Olympiads (particularly in the Sciences), individual A-levels or IB Higher Level subjects, or College Board Advanced Placement tests (APs).

In some circumstances, Colleges may consider an application from a student who is undertaking one year of undergraduate study at a university outside the UK, and wishes to use that study as evidence of their suitability for our degree course. The University of Cambridge is aware that potential applicants holding Ukrainian qualifications may be prevented by circumstances from meeting some elements of the typical offer requirements. United Arab Emirates

United States of America
Cambridge Colleges are used to assessing College Board and ACT qualifications, and these can form an important part of successful applicant profiles. Offers are made on an individual basis, and we recommend that you contact the College you wish to apply to for further advice and guidance.
Typically, suitable evidence of preparation for entry would comprise a minimum of five Advanced Placement (AP) Scores at grade 5, normally taken within two years of matriculation and with particular focus on APs that are taken in subjects related to the course applied for. In addition, high passing marks on your school qualification (eg the relevant US High School Diploma) and a high score on the SAT (I) Reasoning Test or ACT, are expected. Applicants taking these tests are required to disclose all tests taken and scores achieved (including retakes). Failure to disclose any scores may disadvantage your application, and Cambridge Colleges reserve the right to contact ACT, College Board or your school to confirm your results.
When evaluating applicants with qualifications including APs, Colleges will take into account an applicant’s individual circumstances as well as the policies of their school (where taken as part of their standard curriculum), including the number of years taken to complete the declared APs. An applicant, or an applicant’s school, may therefore be asked to provide further information as part of their application.
