Admissions FAQ
If interested, please submit your application and review our admissions criteria.
- If your GRE, TOEFL, or IELTS scores are below our suggested thresholds, consider retaking the test.
- Applications undergo holistic review, considering the online application, statement of purpose, official test scores, transcripts, letters of recommendation, and research experience as a comprehensive package.
- If applying to our Ph.D. program post-MS, highlighting research experience through a recommendation letter can strengthen your application.
Ideally, you should have completed undergraduate coursework in single and multivariable calculus, along with calculus-based introductory probability and/or statistics. Moreover, proficiency in basic computer programming is also advantageous, as well as having knowledge of linear or matrix algebra.
For undergraduate degree applications, we require a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
Feel free to upload your test scores with your application. We evaluate applications holistically, not based on single factors. Strengthen your application by including GRE scores.
You must submit all additional documents via theNC State Graduate School Online Application. Upload your Statement of Purpose in the “Personal Statement” section and other documents in the “Resume/CV” or “Other Documents” sections. Avoid sending hard copies to the OR Program or Graduate School.
Degrees FAQ
Ideally, the MOR or MSOR program typically takes 1.5 to 2 years to complete. Conversely, pursuing a Ph.D. may span 4 to 5 years, contingent upon whether you hold a master’s degree.
Yes, the online classes have the same requirements as in-person sessions.

To defer admission, emailoperationsresearch@ncsu.eduwith:
- Your full name.
- Your 9-digit NC State Student ID Number.
- The program and semester to which you were admitted.
- The semester you would like to defer to.
- A detailed explanation for requesting a deferral. The OR Director and Graduate Schoolmustapprove your deferral.
OR PRO TIP:You can defer admission for up to one year (two academic semesters)
