In 1666 the Great Fire of London was extinguished, having destroyed 13,200 houses, 87 parish churches, the Royal Exchange, Guildhall and St Paul’s Cathedral; in 1899 the first cases of evaporated milk (Carnation Sterilized Cream) were produced, in Washington, US. Nestlé bought the Carnation Company in 1984; in 1901 William McKinley, the 25th US president (1897-1901), was shot in Buffalo, New York, leading to his death eight days later. He was succeeded by Theodore Roosevelt; in 1948 Princess Juliana became queen of the Netherlands after the abdication of her mother. She went on to reign for nearly 32 years; in 1997 Diana, Princess of Wales, was buried in the grounds of Althorp, Northamptonshire, her family’s ancestral home.

Car parks don’t need to be deadscapes. A York park and ride doubles as an orchard, and people leaving their car at Northallerton railway station must walk through an avenue of the most heavily laden blackberry bushes you’re likely to see. Perhaps the most charming UK car park can be found serving the cricket ground at Chester-le-Street. Here, cricket fans have their cars shaded by mature trees whose graceful, arching branches provide birdsong while keeping the metalwork cool. One tree is a particularly fine white poplar. Drivers parking near it will easily locate their vehicle even after the busiest Test match: the slightest breeze teases the tree’s canopy into a wild, clattering dance of white leaves.
