Nature notes
Your nature correspondent was wondering what to write about when a rapid buzzing filled the writing room. A wasp had flown in through the open window. No ordinary wasp, it was Ectemnius continuus. Black and yellow, with a square head and bright yellow tibiae (the fourth and largest segment of its leg), the Ectemnius continuus grows 8 to 14mm long, and has no English name. Perhaps it came inside to look for one of its favourite prey items, the housefly. More likely, the wooden window frame had attracted it. Ectemnius continuus build their nests in dead wood, sometimes burrowing quite elaborate tunnels, where they lay their eggs. Each egg is provisioned with six to eight dead flies for the larvae to eat when they have hatched. Jonathan Tulloch
