SMC is such a wonderful environment. All, and I mean ALL of the staff are very kind and respectful. In addition to that, the campus itself is overwhelmingly beautiful. Upon initially going to said school, I immediately presumed and anticipated to feel ostracized by peers, albeit that wasn’t the case. On Orientation Day, I truly felt welcomed by everyone, so much so that now I feel motivated than ever to study. Thanks to SMC, I genuinely look forward to each and every day I wake up. The professors and even my fellow classmates are easily to mingle with, and I personally feel like I have a second family. Honestly, the fact I’m proud to be a Corsair may be an enormous understatement. Overall, I am beyond grateful for the opportunity to be able to study at such a prestigious institution. Despite my brief time there so far, I have met extraordinary people and even made close friends as well. Truth be told, I have nothing negative to express about SMC. I simply love it with all my heart!
Santa Monica College was a good experience overall. They offer a wider range of courses than other community colleges around the area. Many of them are online (and some asynchronous) which is extremely helpful for working students or for those taking General Education courses. All the campuses I've been to are very pretty, with nice architechture and a high standard of cleanliness. Many professors are very knowledgeable and skilled in their respective fields. In terms of student life, each student's experience is what they put into it-- taking in person classes and reaching out will make the social scene a lot better than someone who is mostly online. The only thing I would change about the college has to do with their counseling services. Unless you are in a certain program, you are unable to contact or meet with a counselor over zoom, but have to come in person and wait in line. When you do manage to speak to one though, they can be very helpful.
My time at Santa Monica College was really transformative. I loved the diversity on campus and the opportunities to connect with people from all over the world. Being involved in the Japanese club and the Black Collegians Program Umoja Community gave me a strong sense of belonging, and I enjoyed the campus culture. The professors were dedicated, and I appreciated the support systems available for students.
However, I think there could be more emphasis on career placement services, especially for students looking to transition into specific industries after graduation. Expanding internship opportunities or connecting students with potential employers earlier on would be a great addition to the already strong academic support.
