Graduate
We offer admission to the M.S. and Ph.D. programs. The Ph.D. program is intended for students that wish to pursue a research-oriented career, while the M.S. program is intended for students seeking advanced positions in the industry. Admission to the Ph.D. program is more competitive than the M.S. program.
To apply for Graduate Studies in Mechanical Engineering at Stony Brook you must fill out an online application. You can fill out the application online atGraduate School's web site. Please note that there may be more steps involved than simply filling out the form online. Please note that there are no application fee waivers. Also, when sending the required application documents please include a photocopy of your GRE and TOEFL scores besides having official scores sent directly from the testing services (e.g.,ETS).
Admission Requirements for a MS or PhD
A bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, or closely related engineering fields.
A grade average of at least B or equivalent.
Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test is required. (Note:Submission of GRE scores is optional for an applicant who graduated or will graduate from a college/university in the United States.)
Students who indicate that their first or native language is not English are required to submit either a TOEFL or IELTS. The minimum English proficiency requirements are noted inthe Graduate Bulletin.Exam scores should be reported on your application and submitted electronically through ETS using the Stony Brook University School Code:2548

All supplementary materials including recommendation letters, official transcripts, and test scores must be received within a few weeks of the respective deadline.
Financial Support
The Department offers financial support in the form of teaching or research assistantships, which generally include tuition scholarships. Note: the teaching assistantships are offered only to those in the Ph.D. program and made for the fall admissions. Students who are interested in receiving research assistantships are encouraged directly contact the faculty in the Department for possible supports.
M.S. students are typically admitted with no financial aid. Some, however, find such aid through theSPIRprogram or as a Student Assistant after they arrive on campus. Information regarding tuition and other costs can be found on the Stony Brook University Bursar website.
