The world-class UTS Master of Science (Extension) is an advanced science degree designed to propel students into senior roles in their chosen scientific discipline. Supported by teaching excellence, industry collaboration and access to cutting-edge facilities and technologies, students gain the theoretical, practical and professional expertise to deliver meaningful impact in the global science sector. The Master of Science (Extension) includes an additional 24 credit points of electives beyond the standard Master of Science curriculum and can be completed in two years of full-time study.
This leading qualification supports students to further deepen or broaden their existing expertise or to tailor their learning to meet personal or professional goals. Course content combines high-level scientific skills development with professional and research opportunities, a choice of six industry-aligned majors that reflect priority areas of scientific advancement in Australia overseas, and a vast choice of elective options that includes subjects in business, intellectual property and leadership. Students work under the guidance of acclaimed scientists and mathematicians in their chosen discipline and benefit from flexible learning options that help them balance study, work and life.

Students who achieve a credit average in their first year of study can apply to transfer into theMaster of Philosophy in Science. This highly specialised degree combines coursework subjects with an immersive research project, providing a direct pathway to the UTS PhD program. Students seeking a shorter course of study should consider the UTSMaster of Science.
Choice of major:
- Advanced Studies:This major connects students with a diversity of advanced learning opportunities that span the breadth of scientific enquiry, including mathematics, chemistry and environmental science, among others. Whether they’re seeking broad knowledge across multiple science disciplines or they want to tailor their studies to meet a specific career goal, this major delivers an expanded science education that prepares students to progress their careers.
- Analytical Chemical Technologies:Designed in response to industry demand, this major equips students with in-depth theoretical and practical knowledge of industry-standard analytical instrumentation, as well as an understanding of how to develop and validate their methods in line with international accreditation standards. They can upskill in analytical techniques and their application in diverse fields such as environmental, forensic and medical sciences, among others, and engage with research projects that solve industry-relevant problems.
- Biomedical Engineering:This major arms students with a combination of scientific, research and business skills that will prepare them to innovate in a range of biomedical environments. Curriculum spans advanced scientific concepts, including biomedical instrumentation, nanotechnology, synthetic biology and medical device design and development. Beyond scientific skills development, students also engage with industry-integrated learning, pursue real-world research opportunities, and explore exciting opportunities in project management and entrepreneurship as they relate to the biomedical field.
- Environmental Consultancy and Conservation:This major is focused on the development of high-level ecology, environmental science and management skills and an understanding of environmental practices as they relate to business, government and the community. Students combine advanced scientific theory with ‘muddy boots’ fieldwork and hands-on practice in contaminated site assessment and remediation, wildlife field techniques, water quality management, coastal restoration and more.
- Mathematical and Statistical Data Science:Grounded in the mathematical and statistical underpinnings of data science, this industry-focused major prepares students to apply their expertise in a range of real-world contexts. Curriculum combines theoretical (algebra, analysis) and applied (optimisation, econometrics) mathematics with the study of contemporary data science topics (Bayesian methods, machine learning). Students learn from leading mathematicians and statisticians whose research shapes the profession and emerge ready to capitalise on industry demand for qualified data professionals.
- Medical Laboratory Science:This specialist major is focused on diagnostic pathology and the theory that underpins diagnostic processes and tests. It’s designed for practitioners who are already working in hospital and commercial laboratory settings, as well as up-and-coming pathology professionals and graduates from other science disciplines with an interest in the rapidly expanding pathology sector. Students gain the high-level disciplinary and communication skills expected in senior positions, along with professional and research capabilities that they can apply to a diversity of career paths.

Ben Gad:So the reason why I chose a science degree at UTS is primarily because my cousin came to UTS and she had only good things to say about UTS, but also because my HSC chemistry class came on a tour of UTS and we spent the vast majority of the day actually in the science building. So I was just really impressed with the facilities, also speaking to academics.
I knew that UTS was going to offer me a science degree that was skills-based as opposed to being memory based. I think what people really need to realise is that it's the skills that you get in the science degree, not necessarily the knowledge itself, that are really beneficial. Those skills are transferrable outside of the science discipline.
Stephanie Tan:I chose my science degree, forensic science and applied chemistry at UTS because UTS was easily accessible from where I live. Also UTS was one of the first unis to offer forensic science. During my forensic science degree practical experiences include lab exercises, which are offered with theory. That sort of led me to an internship at ANSTO for one year. That experience has led me to understand how the industry works and what they expect in a lab situation.
Bojana Manojlovic:I chose maths and international studies at UTS because UTS combined the two things that I loved most; mathematics and languages. I spent my in-country study in Milan, Italy. It was a fantastic experience. The maths degree covers a range of mathematical topics like statistics, optimisation, a little bit of pure maths, a lot of applied maths. Later on, once you start getting into the degree, you can choose which path you wish to take, such as environmental, marine, business or finance.
Matt Altaie:During the degree itself you spend at least half the time in the lab. So there's a lot of practical work involved as part of your academic study. However, outside of that a lot of the lecturers actually do their own research here at UTS, which has a lot to do with the physics and the technology fields. You can actually come up and ask them, can I help you with something over summer or over winter or even throughout the semester if they have that kind of thing happening.
The biggest thing though is you are encouraged to use your creative thinking and your problem-solving and you are actually taught to construct all that stuff. So you are, at the end of the day, taught how to think as opposed to what to think.
Liana Pozza:I chose a science degree at UTS because I've always loved environmental sciences. This degree has been really practical in that every subject has had at least one field trip component to it. So whether that be testing water quality, biological indicators such as algae or bugs. Also I've been helping out a PhD student with her seagrass research. Helping her out with this project has really gotten me thinking of getting into research.

Careers
The Master of Science (Extension) prepares graduates for a diverse range of careers in science and beyond, or to continue on into the Master of Philosophy in Science, which provides a pathway to a PhD.
Career options include (but aren’t limited to):
- Advanced Studies:Graduates are equipped for advanced practice in their chosen scientific discipline. They can work in laboratory and scientific practice, digital and data analytics, research and development or other science and technology pathways.
- Analytical Chemical Technologies:Graduates emerge with advanced skills in analytical instrumentation, method development and validation for quantitative analysis, ready for senior roles in a vast range of sectors and roles in which analytical chemistry expertise is highly valued. These include environmental testing, food and agriculture, the resource sector, forensic drug analysis and clinical diagnostics.
- Biomedical Engineering: Graduates are prepared for leadership roles in the biological industry, as well as research and entrepreneurship opportunities in a range of settings. They can launch their own start-ups or take on senior roles in established medical device or biotech companies, hospitals, research and development organisations, and government and regulatory agencies.
- Environmental Consultancy and Conservation:Graduates can pursue thriving consultancy careers or explore opportunities in education and public outreach, research and development, policy or hands-on scientific practice. They work for government agencies, including local councils, environmental protection authorities, and parks, land and water services; CSIRO and other research institutes; tourism centres; and other organisations concerned with natural resource management.
- Mathematical and Statistical Data Science: Statisticians, data scientists and data analysts are increasingly in demand in any organisation seeking expertise to collect, manage, interrogate and extract meaning from their data. Graduates of this major can pursue senior data roles in banks, insurance companies, tech companies, health care organisations and government agencies, including in the health, justice and community settings, among others.
- Medical Laboratory Science: This major can open the door to new opportunities in diagnostic pathology, including the potential to progress to senior roles. It also prepares graduates to apply their skills in to research and development, science communication, health care policy or hospital administration.

Course duration
The standard course duration is two years of full-time study.
The course may also be completed in part-time mode, typically over four years. Part-time students must be prepared to attend some afternoon or morning classes during each teaching week.

Admission requirements
Applicants must have completed a UTS recognised bachelor's degree, or an equivalent or higher qualification, or submitted other evidence of general and professional qualifications that demonstrates potential to pursue graduate studies.
Entry into any of the majors requires a minimum of a Bachelors degree in a related discipline.
The English proficiency requirement for international students or local applicants with international qualifications is: IELTS Academic: 6.5 overall with a writing score of 6.0; or TOEFL iBT: 79-93 overall with a writing score of 21; or AE5: Pass; or PTE: 58-64 with a writing score of 50; or C1A/C2P: 176-184 with a writing score of 169.

International studentsVisa requirement:To obtain a student visa to study in Australia, international students must enrol full time and on campus. Australian student visa regulations also require international students studying on student visas to complete the course within the standard full-time duration. Students can extend their courses only in exceptional circumstances.

Recognition of prior learning
Students enrolled in this course may be eligible for recognition of prior learning of up to 36 credit points if the subjects previously studied are deemed by UTS: Science to be equivalent to those specified for their course.
To be considered for recognition of prior learning, subjects must normally have been completed no more than five years before the commencement of this course.
