How To Apply

We are currently accepting applications for spring and fall 2025.

These application steps are meant forinternational undergraduate applicants(bachelor's degree). If you are an international graduate applicant (master’s degree and higher), please follow the application instructions for ourGraduate School.

Things To Do

  • All international undergraduate students who are not part of an exchange program must apply through theCommon Application.
    • There is a one-time, nonrefundable $35 USD Common Application processing fee for all undergraduate international applicants. Please do not request a Common App fee waiver as we do not allow for waivers of the application fee.
  • Apply as an international undergraduate student if you are not a US citizen or legal permanent resident and you will require a visa of any kind to study in the United States—even if you are already in the US on a temporary or dependent visa.

Things Not To Do

  • Students with dual US citizenshipshould notapply as international undergraduate students, even if they currently reside outside of the United States.
  • Pleasedo notsend letters of recommendation, photographs, portfolios, personal essays, or additional documents unless they are specifically required by the Admissions Office. Doing so may delay your decision.
  • Pleasedo notsend required application documents until they have been requested on your Application Portal checklist. These documents will be requested after you submit your application.

After Submission

Please allow one to two weeks after documents are submitted before your online Application Portal checklist is updated.

Once you have applied for admission and submitted all of your required application documents (see application requirements below),you can expect to receive an admissions decision within three to six weeks(starting in mid-September).

Deadlines

Spring 2025 (January Start Date)

  • Applications are due byOctober 1, 2024.
  • All application documents are due byOctober 15, 2024.
  • All post-acceptance I-20 documents are due byNovember 1, 2024.
  • Accepted international undergraduate students who have met theF-1 post-acceptance requirementswill be issued an I-20 for visa application.No I-20 documents will be issued after November 15, 2024.

Fall 2025 (August Start Date)

  • Applications are due byApril 1, 2025.
  • All application documents are due byMay 1, 2025.
  • All post-acceptance I-20 documents are due byJune 1, 2025.
  • Accepted international undergraduate students who have met theF-1 post-acceptance requirementswill be issued an I-20 for visa application.No I-20 documents will be issued after June 15, 2025.

Application Requirements

First-Year Students

  1. Complete yourCommon Applicationand pay theone-time, nonrefundable $35 USD Common Application processing fee.
    • During the application process, you will create an Application Portal user account. The Application Portal is where you will track your application status.
  2. Arrange to have your official secondary school (high school) transcripts or attested marks sheets sent tointernational@mtu.edu.
    • All transcripts must be sent from your school directly to Michigan Tech—we cannot accept them if you send them to us yourself.
    • These documents must include your most recent three years of grades. If you have attended multiple schools in the last three years, have each school send official transcripts.
    • English translations must accompany all documents.

  1. Submit an English proficiency test score. This requirement may be waived depending on your country of origin and/or prior study in the US. Read theEnglish proficiency pagefor a list of exempt countries and test score requirements.

Country-Specific Additional Requirements

  • India
    Required:CBSE secondary school examination results.
  • Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and the Gambia
    Required:WAEC or NECO examination results and scratchcard information.
  • Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Belize, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Montserrat, St. Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, and Turks and Caicos
    Required:Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) and/or Caribbean Secondary Education Certification (CSEC or CXC) results.
  • Students enrolled in Cambridge curriculum schools
    Required:Official GCSE or IGCSE examination resultsandofficial AS-level results or predicted A-level marks.
  • Additional country specific requirements may be requested and are subject to change without notice.

Transfer Students

    • During the application process, you will create an Application Portal user account. The Application Portal is where you will track your application status.
  2. Arrange to have your official secondary school (high school) transcripts or attested marks sheets and proof of completion sent tointernational@mtu.edu.
    • All transcripts, marks sheets, and proof of completion documents must be sent from your school directly to Michigan Tech—we cannot accept them if you send them to us yourself.
    • If you have completed two or more years of study at the college/university level, your secondary school only needs to send proof of completion to Michigan Tech.
    • English translations must accompany all documents.

  2. Arrange to have your official college/university transcripts sent tointernational@mtu.edu.
    • All transcripts must be sent from the college or university directly to Michigan Tech—we cannot accept them if you send them to us yourself.
    • If you have attended multiple colleges or universities, have each school send official transcripts to Michigan Tech.
    • English translations must accompany all documents.
  3. For colleges/universities outside the US and Canada, you must submit official transcripts to one of the pre-approved credential evaluators listed below for a course-by-course evaluation. Students must contact the course evaluation service on their own and pay for the evaluation to be done and sent to Michigan Tech.

Transfer Credit Process

To apply for international transfer credit, you must provide a syllabus or course description (in English), for each course taken outside of the US. You must include:

  1. Course name
  2. Course number
  3. Start and end date of each course
  4. Description of each course and the topics it covered
  5. Textbook titles for each course, including author, edition, and date of publication
  • To ensure proper transfer credit, all documents should be submitted to the Admissions Office at least four months prior to your intended start date. Credits are only evaluated if you have been admitted and the enrollment deposit is paid.
  • Current Michigan Tech students who want to take a course in their home country or other countries should work with Transfer Services staff in the Registrar's Officebeforethey plan to take the course.
  • Only courses comparable to Michigan Tech courses are eligible, and a minimum US equivalent grade of a C or higher must be earned.
  • Courses listed on official transcripts with no grade or score, with grades of C- or below (D, F, below 1.0 on four-point scale), with Pass/Fail scores, with "Audit" or "AU" in place of a grade, or with a value of 0 credit hours are not eligible for transfer credit.
  • Transfer credit is determined by the appropriate Michigan Tech academic department for equivalent content.
  • Michigan Tech reserves the right to award transfer credit following its own policies and procedures.

Exchange Students (Non-Degree-Seeking)

With the nomination of your home university, you may apply to Michigan Tech for up to one year of non-degree-seeking studies as an exchange student.

  1. To apply as an exchange student, you must first be nominated by your home university. Once we have received your nomination, we will email you a direct link to our exchange student application. All questions and inquiries regarding exchanges should be emailed tostudyabroad@mtu.edu.
  2. Email your university transcripts or documents tointernational@mtu.edu.
    • You or your university's exchange coordinator can send the transcripts.
    • English translations must accompany all documents.

Post-Acceptance Required Documents

F-1 | Admitted First-Year Students and Transfer Students

To receive an I-20, you must show proof of funds for one year of studies. After you are accepted to Michigan Tech, access to documents will be available in your Application Portal. Students must submit the following required documents. Some documents can be uploaded directly to your Applicant Portal, and some (such as bank statements) cannot. Any documents that cannot be uploaded should be emailed tointernational@mtu.edu.

  1. A completedAffidavit of Financial Support (F-1). It must be dated no more than 12 months before the semester start date.

  2. Supporting proof of funds documents showing sufficient funds for at least one full year of studies, dated no more than 12 months before the semester start date. Acceptable proofs include bank statements, scholarship letters, and loan letters.
  3. A copy of your passport photo page.
  4. For SEVIS transfer students who are already in the US on an F-1 visa, aTransfer In Formis also required.

J-1 | Admitted Exchange Students

To receive a DS-2019 for visa application, you must show proof of funds for your duration of studies. After you are accepted to Michigan Tech, access to documents will be available in your Application Portal. Students must submit the following required documents. Some documents can be uploaded directly to your Applicant Portal, and some (such as bank statements) cannot. Any documents that cannot be uploaded should be emailed tointernational@mtu.edu.

  1. A completedAffidavit of Financial Support (J-1). It must be dated no more than 12 months before the semester start date.
  2. Supporting proof of funds documents showing sufficient funds for your duration of studies, dated no more than 12 months before the semester start date. Acceptable proofs include bank statements, scholarship letters, and loan letters.
  3. A copy of your passport photo page.

Dependent Visa Holders

If you are currently in the US on a dependent visa status, such as H-4, L-2, or J-2, and you plan to keep* that status as you begin your studies at Michigan Tech, you do not need to submit financial documents, but should still submit the following through your Application Portal:

  • A copy of your passport photo page.

*Note that you can only study on your dependent visa until you turn 21 or your parent's visa status changes, whichever comes first. With plenty of time in advance of losing your status and your ability to study, you should review theprocess for changing your status to F-1. When you are ready to change your status to F-1, you should work with the Michigan Tech International Programs and Services Office to do so.
