• There are good and bad professors
• I have been in mostly general education classes at Heidelberg University so far. It seems that you really enjoy the class and teacher, or you really cant stand the class or teacher. Some teachers are really engaging, keep students attention and get to know the students. Where some teachers are hard to understand, either in their speech or teaching ways, are really dry in class discussion and dont seem to put a lot of effort in teaching students on a personal level. There is a pretty heavy workload but if you keep your priorities straight its possible to balance it all. The registration process is online which is easy for me but to others it can be difficult. Overall I think Heidelberg has some great professors and classes and some that need great change.
• The Math department isn't that great at Heidelberg and I was thoroughly dissapointed in it. It has also made me second guess my major in Mathematics. The teacher doesn't do well in explaining the material and ultimately confuses me more then teaches me.
• The classes range from nearly impossible to very easy. The one common factor among all of the classes which earns the aforementioned grade is the passion which all of the teachers have for their respective subjects. I love it.
• Here at Heidelberg, size matters. The campus is small, the classes are smaller, and it shows. The teachers here at the school are all (with one exception) fantastic people who are more than willing to go out of their way to help any student in need. Class discussion in constantly encouraged. Study abroad is encouraged here as well, with programs established in Oxford, Heidelberg Germany and Glasgow, as well as literally dozens more. I and my friends here are extremely satisfied with the quality of teaching that we receive.
• Love-Hate Relationship – I'm a music education major at Heidelberg, and I love it- most of the time. Most music majors have a love-hate relationship with Heidelberg. It's just changed for this coming year from a music department to a school of music, but none of the professors have really explained what exactly that entails. We've been told that it will change how the music and education schools will work together, but not how it's going to change. There have been several changes to the faculty for this coming semester, but it's been very confusing for most of us. However, it's a wonderful place to be. Being such a small school, it's a small music dept, and we know everybody. It's nice for your professors to know your name, and to be so familiar with everyone in the department that asking for help or a second opinion on the piece you just wrote isn't uncomfortable. The professors push you, and help you to be your best. The workload is huge. We have plenty of homework, but most of the work is practicing for private lessons and ensembles. A lot of students practically live in Brenneman (the music building) so much that the students last year nicknamed it Brenn-katraz.
• History Nerd – When I started at Heidelberg I wanted to be a High School English teacher. However over the course of my freshman and sophomore years I discovered a love for History and decided to I wanted to teach that. After my own experience in an environment where I was actually teaching I decided it was not for me. Thanks to the support from one of my history professors I am now a History Major who is looking into going into archiving or museum work and I couldn't be happier. The History department at Heidelberg is fantastic and the professors are always available to help whether it is through scheduled meetings, e-mails or by just stopping by their offices.
• English Education and English Writing – I am a double major in Adolescent-Young Adult English Education and English writing. The English department is very good: I enjoy the professors and the classes. The workload is hard, but worth it. I do think, though, that our education department needs a little bit of work. Since they have fit a 5 year program into 4 years, the work load is very heavy, but in that they can weed out the students who are not committed to the educational process. I think that some classes need to be reevaluated and that more field work should be more integrated instead of being in class constantly, but all in all, it is a good program.
• Professor to student ratio is rather high. Professors are very helpful and and many will help students outside of class. *(4)
